Future Conservation (and Educational) Activities:
We would eventually like to create more sanctuaries for parrots. We would like to raise money to purchase land or get land donated to us to provide safe and secure permanent housing for parrots that are not suitable for placement in home settings. Sanctuaries for abused, abandoned and neglected parrots, aside from being a refuge, are also an educational center to teach people about these creatures of the wild so that we may come one step closer to preserving them and their ecosystems.
We would like to bring children and prospective supporters to this sanctuary by outreaching to schools, the media, public agencies, bird clubs and environmental/animal organizations through beautifully designed web sites, advertisements and brochures/flyers.
Many of our birds require rehabilitation and/or veterinary treatment. We would try to work with veterinarians who provide pro bono services. We would also create an extensive volunteer program and recruit interested individuals who can help with maintenance of enclosures, feeding, cleaning and playtime with the birds. This can be a part of a school or veterinary hospital internship program.
Birds are now the third most common pet in the United States. There are many adoption centers for dogs and cats but very few for parrots despite the immense need. Parrots are sold, given away, lost or even set free at an average of every three years and they can live 30-70 years depending on the species. We work with people to help them keep their bird - and their investment - or we educate the new adopted family about the appropriate care of these birds to prevent future need for adoptions. Parrot CARE also provides adoptions for unwanted birds that might otherwise be "freed" into the environment. Future activities under Rescue and Adoptions would be teaching people how to create home aviaries for porches/balconies and back yards so that birds can have a larger living space and full flight. In-house aviaries may also be possible for homes able to accommodate them. Another future goal is the foster care of birds on a temporary basis in aviaries until they can be housed in a sanctuary or permanently adopted
