The Sanctuary
Serenity Park was created by Lorin Lindner, PhD, MPH as an ecotherapy program for United States Veterans. Ecotherapy is applied when Veterans come to work with animals (in this case birds) and, through this interaction, overcome the obstacles that often inhibit their return to the work force. Disabled Veterans are given the opportunity to care for, feed, and socialize the birds. A bond is created and they are able to see the fruits of their labor. Both the birds and the Veterans are beneficially impacted by the program. From this interaction and hands on training, each Veteran discovers untapped strengths and skills that can be utilized in the workforce.
Serenity Park is an oasis on the West Los Angeles VA grounds not only is it a "green" secluded area but a place of real healing.
At Serenity Park traumatic events experienced by both species are addressed in a kind of coupled therapy. Navy veteran, Matthew Simmons, was quoted as saying "because the birds are independent and unique you must set up each relationship on an individual basis. This has forced me to enter all of my new relationships without bias and learn how to treat each creature with compassion and caring".
This development is what we strive for at Serenity Park. Please support us in our efforts to support our veterans, care for the birds, and carve out some green space in Los Angeles.
In short Serenity Park is a place of healing for our Veterans and we strive to impact the lives of those who have served.
